Iloilo City reports 92% recovery of acute gastro cases

The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) of the City Health Office (CHO) here has reported a 92 percent recovery rate out of its 607 acute gastroenteritis cases as of Sept. 18.

CESU medical coordinator, Dr. Marigold Calsas, in a press conference on Monday, said 39 active cases remain, with the addition of three new cases over the weekend — 14 are still admitted and 25 are being managed at home.

“We have no additional confirmed cholera case but we still have 21 pending rectal swab results that was sent last week to the RITM (Research Institute for Tropical Medicine),” she added.

The results are expected within this week.

There was additional one death, bringing the total fatalities to 12.

Even with the high recoveries, Calsas said that still they could not say that the number of cases has dropped since new ones were recorded over the weekend.

She said there could be underreporting as surveillance is not active during weekends and reports from hospitals have yet to be tallied.

She urged those who are still suffering from acute gastroenteritis to submit to the rectal swab since the city health office is aiming to document or confirm cholera cases.

“They need to be reported for immediate action and control measures to contain the infection. That is a weekly reportable disease,” she added.
