Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Sunday announced his resignation following his ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s major defeat in the July House of Councillors election. At a hastily called press conference, Ishiba stated his decision to resign as president of the LDP, which also necessitates his stepping down as prime minister.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ishiba found it increasingly difficult to maintain his position as calls for his resignation grew within the LDP. The party will now organize a leadership election to determine Ishiba’s successor. Ishiba is expected to vacate his office after a new prime minister is elected during an extraordinary Diet session.
As part of his resignation statement, Ishiba highlighted that his administration had reached a significant milestone in tariff negotiations with the United States, which he cited as a reason for his decision to step down.
