MANILA: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday said it is prepared for the anticipated road congestion in Metro Manila after the holiday season as travelers are expected to return to the metropolis by January 3.
In a Laging Handa public briefing, MMDA deputy chairperson Frisco San Juan Jr. said the agency has coordinated with local government units, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Transportation, as well as bus companies to decongest the major thoroughfares in the metropolis.
“Ang buhos ng sasakyan siyempre sa darating na Martes sapagkat sa Lunes ay holiday po, walang pasok ang mga opisina ng pamahalaan. At ang simula naman ng pagpasok naman ng mga private companies at saka ng mga ibang eskuwelahan ay magsisimula na rin po sa January 3. Nakahanda na rin po tayo riyan sapagkat taun-taon ay iyan naman ang ating pinaghahandaan (The increase in vehicle volume is expected on Tuesday because Monday is a holiday. Work is suspended for government offices. And offices and schools will resume their operations on Jan. 3. We are ready for that because we are anticipating it every year),” San Juan said.
San Juan said Metro Manila’s traffic has breached pre-pandemic levels, with the daily traffic volume, reaching 420,000 to 430,000 vehicles daily.
He, however, noted an increase in travel speed along Edsa, adding that it is higher compared to the pre-pandemic speed of 11 kilometer per hour.
