MPI AWARDS: BERNAMA WINS FIRST PRIZE IN OUTSTANDING FEATURE CATEGORY; TWO OTHER AWARDS

The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) scooped up three awards at the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI)-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2023 today.

Its feature and current affairs desk reporter, Nurul Isnaini Mohd Muslim bagged gold (first prize) in the Outstanding Feature category.

She took home a trophy, RM10,000 cash prize and a certificate for three articles "High Schools for Girls Become Battleground for Afghanistan's Future", "Under Taliban 2.0, Women Wait in Fear for the Real Face to Emerge" and "Desperate Afghans Beg for Crumbs at Bakeries".

Meanwhile, three Bernama journalists, Sakina Mohamed, Wan Muhammad Aslah Wan Razali and Ummul Syuhaida Othman won the bronze prize, taking home RM1,000 in cash and a certificate in the Outstanding Multimedia Journalism category.

For the Best Radio Report category, Bernama Radio broadcast journalist Muhammad Azim Zaid emerged as the second-prize winner with his report "Menara Gading di Sebalik Tirai Besi", taking home a cash prize of RM1,500 and a certificate.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim attended the prestigious ceremony, which took place in Kuala Lumpur tonight, accompanied by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil and his deputy, Teo Nie Ching, MPI chief executive officer Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya and Petronas executive vice-president Liza Mustapha.

Nurul Isnaini said when met that she did not expect her feature articles to attract the jury’s attention as it was geared towards an international issue.

“I’m honoured with this award and I hope we will produce more and high-quality news, and perhaps aimed for higher achievement like Kajai Award next edition,” the 20-year media veteran said.

Muhammad Azim meanwhile described his win as a huge acknowledgement after spending a decade in the journalism field.

The Malaysia MPI-Petronas Journalism Awards are an annual affair held to commemorate excellent pieces of journalism.

Speaking to reporters, Fahmi said the recognition given to journalists and media practitioners is hoped to spur them to do their best and carry out their duties ethically.

“Also, the ministry and MPI, along with media agencies will continue to look for room and opportunities to ensure media-related issues, especially ethics, are improved,” he added.
