Manila: The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) has declared that the recent clash in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, will not be used for propaganda by supporters of communist insurgents. This statement comes in response to accusations against the military following the January 1 operation against the New People's Army (NPA), which resulted in the death of a female student.
According to Philippines News Agency, NTF-ELCAC Executive Director, Undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr., emphasized the importance of presenting the full truth of the incident. He stated that the task force would not allow the event to be reduced to slogans or selective outrage, particularly as it concerns the affected communities and youth.
Torres addressed the accusations of International Humanitarian Law violations by some groups, clarifying that the context of why the operation occurred and who was affected is often missing from reports. He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and noted that the student was not merely a civilian caught in crossfire but had been recruited into the NPA.
He stressed that no family should endure the loss of a child due to armed conflict, highlighting the tragedy of radicalization and recruitment by insurgent groups. Torres assured that the NTF-ELCAC's priority remains the safe recovery of other students involved and their return to their families through lawful means.
The operation in Sitio Mamara, Barangay Cabacao, was prompted by reports from residents about intimidation, extortion, and abuses by NPA elements. Torres mentioned that affected communities are now seeking government protection and that their calls for peace should not be ignored.
In a related development, the Liga ng mga Barangay of Abra de Ilog has condemned the presence of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front in their area. Additionally, heightened security measures were confirmed by the Nuestra Se±ora del Pilar Shrine and Parish in Mamburao after the arrival of a group claiming to be from Karapatan following the incident.
Torres concluded by emphasizing the significance of listening to barangay officials and community members who advocate for peace and stability.
