MANILA Some parts of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) will be closed to motorists starting on Saturday to give way for the construction of the Skyway Stage 3 in Balintawak, Quezon City, a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) official said Friday.
We are appealing for the patience and understanding of the public, but we are also assuring them that MMDA, NLEX, and Skyway teams will exert all efforts to minimize travel delays despite the ongoing construction, MMDA general manager Jose Arturo Garcia said in a press briefing held in Makati City.
The construction will be conducted along a 1-km. stretch of NLEX Balintawak, which will affect northbound motorists traveling in Balintawak Cloverleaf, Camachile, and Bagong Barrio, including the east and west service roads.
The MMDA will implement a traffic rerouting scheme in coordination with the NLEX Corp. starting 11 p.m. on Saturday until the end of this year for the construction of the Skyway Stage 3 by Citra Central Expressway Corp (CCEC). of San Miguel Corp.
Motorists coming from NLEX going to Quezon City may use Smart Connect Interchange heading to Mindanao Ave. and turn right at the Mindanao intersection going to Quezon City to destination.
Private vehicles, vans, jeepneys from Quirino Highway bound for Edsa via Camachile may use Camachile Flyover turn right towards West Service Road then turn right at Edsa.
Jeepneys may take a U-turn at Biglang Awa, turn right at Cloverleaf to A. Bonifacio (to Blumentritt) or take the southeast loop to return to Novaliches.
Trucks from Quirino Highway going to A. Bonifacio will not be allowed at Camachile but instead must head towards Mindanao Ave. then turn left at NLEX Mindanao entry going to Smart Connect Interchange towards NLEX southbound. This also applies for trucks going from Congressional to A. Bonifacio/Port Area.
Private cars and vans from Edsa MuAoz to Port Area may head to Monumento crossing Balintawak Cloverleaf, turn left at De Jesus St., head straight to C3 then at the C3 intersection, turn right to Port Area.
The plan also includes closing the ramp from Edsa northbound to A. Bonifacio.
Certain areas of NLEX Balintawak will also be widened to ensure smooth flow of traffic within the area.
Private vehicles from NLEX going Balintawak southbound will have the option to choose their preferred routes, jeepneys and UV Express units will follow their specific routes, while buses will keep on their designated franchise routes. Trucks coming from NLEX will not be rerouted.
The MMDA and NLEX Corp. will deploy traffic patrol officers and marshals to manage traffic flow within the construction area and guide motorists towards the alternate routes in coordination with CCEC and local government units.
MMDA will also conduct its operations to clear obstructions, such as illegally parked vehicles and sidewalk vendors along the alternative routes.
Traffic direction signs will also be installed at strategic locations while real-time traffic updates at the NLEX will be posted on electronic variable message signs and announced via social media accounts.
We are hoping that with all these preparations in place, our motorists and commuters can plan their trips ahead and reach their destinations safe and on time, Garcia said.
The Skyway Stage 3 Project is an elevated toll road that will connect the SLEX and NLEX from Buendia, Makati City to Bagong Barrio, Caloocan City crossing the Edsa Balintawak Cloverleaf.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2019. (PNA)
