MANILAThe Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) on Sunday congratulated Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo for capturing the country's first gold medal in the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar expressed admiration for Yulo's talent and determination after he tallied a total score of 15.300 in the men's floor exercise final of the event held in Stuggart, Germany on Saturday.
Not only has he done the sport of gymnastics in the Philippines proud, Yulo has also done his country proud by being the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the event, Andanar said in a statement.
In 2018, Yulo landed the country's first ever podium finish in the World Championships when he won the bronze for the same category in Doha, Qatar.
Andanar described Yulo's gold finish as truly a historic event worth celebrating with Filipinos worldwide and expressed hope he would do just as well in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
We expect great things from this talented young man at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he added.
Yulo is poised to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after advancing to the finals of the men's all- around and floor exercise events.
Earlier, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William Ramirez said he was thrilled with Yulo's golden performance.
Yulo defeated Artem Dolgopyat of Israel who scored 15.200 and Xiao Ruoteng of China who scored 14.933.
He scored 8.800 in exercise with a 6.500 degree of difficulty. (PNA)
