The Department of Energy (DOE) reported on Monday that the country has saved a total of 65.32 megawatts of power during this year’s celebration of Earth Hour.
Celebrated last March 26 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Filipinos were enjoined to participate in this year’s Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights.
DOE said the largest energy savings were recorded in Luzon at 35.26 MW, followed by Mindanao at 15.3 MW and Visayas at 14.67 MW.
DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi has urged Filipinos to save energy not only during Earth Hour, but to make smart consumption of electricity as a way of life.
“We hope to sustain this reduction through consistent energy efficiency and conservation practices. The first step is to be mindful of our energy consumption habits, especially during periods of high demand, such as this summer season,” Cusi said.
He added the agency will continue to promote energy efficiency and conservation throughout the country.
Energy efficiency and conservation helps in reducing energy consumption and in effect, has a great impact on the environment.
The DOE has been encouraging Filipinos to conserve energy, especially at this time when global oil prices remain elevated.
