Philippines Set to Compete in Two Final Events at Chengdu World Games


Chengdu: The Philippines is gearing up to compete in two additional events on the final day of the World Games in Chengdu, China, before the closing ceremony wraps up the international competition.



According to Philippines News Agency, the nation has already secured two silver and two bronze medals at the Games. The silver medals were claimed by Kaila Napolis in the women’s -52kg ju-jitsu category and Chezka Centeno in the women’s 10-ball billiards event. Meanwhile, Carlos Baylon Jr. earned a bronze in the men’s sanda 56kg class in wushu, and Aislinn Yap secured a bronze in the women’s combat 80kg category in sambo.



On the final day, Kim Mangrobang, Merry Joy Trupa, Bea Quiambao, Franklin Yee, John Patrick Ciron, and Maynard Pecson will participate in the duathlon mixed relay event at Xinglong Lake Hubin Arena. Additionally, powerlifter Joyce Reboton will represent the Philippines in the women’s super heavyweight division at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium.



China currently leads the medal tally with a total of 43 medals, including 27 golds. They are followed by Germany, Ukraine, and Italy, each with significant medal counts. The highlight of the closing ceremony will be the handover of the World Games flag to Karlsruhe, Germany, which is set to host the 2029 edition of the Games. The German city, which previously hosted the Games in 1989, has allocated 120 million euros for the upcoming event.



Stephen Arapoc, the Muaythai president, has served as the chef de mission for the 47-member Team Philippines. The team received support from the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission. Historically, the Philippines has achieved success at the World Games, with Carlo Biado winning the men’s single nine-ball event in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2017, and Junna Tsukii triumphing in the kumite women’s 50kg category in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, in 2022.
