PNP Orders Tighter Probe After Sibulan Shooting

Philippine national police: Acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has instructed a comprehensive investigation into the Sibulan, Negros Oriental shooting that resulted in four fatalities, including three police officers.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez has directed the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region to thoroughly investigate all aspects of the incident, stressing that transparency is crucial. He has also mandated stricter supervision and discipline among unit commanders, holding them accountable for the actions of their personnel.

Emphasizing command responsibility, Nartatez warned that failure to enforce standards would be addressed according to the law. He reminded all PNP personnel of their duty to remain physically, emotionally, and psychologically fit.

The directive comes after a Friday night incident at a bar in Sibulan, where Staff Sgt. Bonifacio Saycon allegedly shot a woman and then three police officers inside a vehicle. All four officers were reportedly in the bar prior to the shooting.

Saycon is currently detained and is expected to face both criminal and administrative charges, as confirmed by Nartatez.
