President Rodrigo Duterte has sought for a probe into the attempt of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to purchase overpriced radar speed guns, MalacaAang said on Tuesday.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte was angry when he discovered the PNP was willing to spend as much as PHP950,000 to purchase the radar speed guns when it only cost the Davao City government some PHP10,000 each.
I suppose it goes without saying. When there is an anomaly, the investigation should be forthcoming, Panelo said in a Palace briefing.
Panelo did not identify which agency will be conducting the investigation.
Asked if the President would also abolish other procurements made by the police force, Panelo said it would be up to Interior Secretary Eduardo AAo to make the decision.
I don't know about the rest. But as far as the President is concerned, Sec. Ano would be in charge of that, Panelo said.
Speaking before members of the Philippine Marine Corps in Taguig City on Monday night, Duterte bared that he ordered the removal of the police's procurement power.
Duterte said he called up AAo and asked him to be in charge of the purchase of equipment and firearms instead.
The President found it stupid to purchase radar speed guns for almost a million pesos when it could be bought for a much cheaper price.
The President also warned other government agencies against using public funds for personal gain.
Since Duterte has yet to appoint a new PNP chief, AAo currently supervises the PNP, while Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa stays as PNP officer-in-charge.
Duterte asked AAo to fix the police force before he names a new leader for the country's police force.
