Manila: Both the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) and the peso ended the week up, two days after the Christmas holiday. The local bourse’s main index finished the day’s trade up by 0.39 percent to 6,065.64 points, hitting forecasts earlier in the day that the PSEi would test the 6,000-level. The broader All Shares rose by 0.50 percent to 3,464.66 points.
According to Philippines News Agency, most of the sectoral gauges also gained during the day, namely the Mining and Oil, which increased by 3.18 percent; Property, up by 1.38 percent; Services, rising by 0.55 percent; and Financials, which rose by 0.54 percent. On the other hand, the Industrial sector fell by 0.20 percent and Holding Firms decreased by 0.08 percent.
Trading volume reached 1.04 billion shares, amounting to PHP2.77 billion. Advancers led decliners at 107 to 80, with 60 shares unchanged. Relatively, the local currency gained against the US dollar, closing the day at 58.71 from 58.85 last Tuesday. There was no trading on Wednesday and Thursday due to the Christmas holiday.
The peso opened the day at 58.75, remaining steady from the previous trading session. It strengthened to as much as 58.71 but was pulled back to 58.84. The average for the day stood at 58.80. The trading volume reached USD1.06 billion, which was lower than the USD1.14 billion recorded last Tuesday.
