Negros oriental: Psychosocial abuse has been identified as the leading cause of violence against women and children, according to a non-government organization in Negros Oriental. Cindy Uy, the executive director of Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation (GWAVE), highlighted the prevalence of such cases during a phone interview with the Philippine News Agency.
According to Philippines News Agency, GWAVE has handled a total of 246 cases through its legal assistance program from November 2024 to October 2025. The cases predominantly involve violations of Republic Act 9262, known as the Violence Against Women and Children Act, which encompasses various forms of abuse including physical, psychological, sexual, and economic. Psychological abuse, characterized by extramarital affairs, fear, humiliation, and emotional distress, emerged as the most common type.
Uy detailed the specific cases logged during the period: 37 instances of physical abuse, 68 of psychosocial abuse, one of sexual abuse (marital rape), and eight of economic abuse. Additionally, other reported cases outside of RA 9262 included 10 instances of rape and seven acts of lasciviousness.
The GWAVE executive director also provided an overview of the legal proceedings and support services: six cases are currently at the prosecutor's office level, 20 clients have active court cases, 22 are receiving support through the client support program, and 22 cases are in the process of being assigned or built up.
In observance of National Women's Month in March, GWAVE is intensifying its efforts to provide legal assistance and support services to victims of abuse. The organization urges women to seek professional help without delay if they experience any form of abuse from their partners.
