MANILAA partylist lawmaker on Wednesday called on the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure that there would be no delay in the payment of the honoraria of teachers who will serve in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on May 14.
Kabayan Rep. Ron Salo said the honoraria should be given within 15 days from the election date according to the law, stressing that the honoraria of teachers should already be deposited in their ATM accounts on or before May 31.
"I can only hope DepEd makes good on that promise. I have my doubts because other payments to teachers these past months have been delayed," Salo said.
"Sana naman hindi pumalya ang pangakong within 15 days mababayaran na ang mga gurong maglilingkod sa May 14 Barangay and SK elections (Hopefully, [DepEd] won't fall short on its promise to pay within 15 days our teachers who will serve in the May 14 Barangay and SK elections)," he added.
The law provides for the following honoraria rates: the Chairperson of Electoral Boards shall receive PHP6,000; members of Electoral Boards shall receive PHP5,000; Department of Education Supervisor Officials shall receive PHP4,000; and support staff shall receive PHP2,000.
DepEd said these honoraria "are exclusive of an additional PHP1,000 travel allowance."
Other benefits include a minimum of five days' service credit; legal indemnification package worth PHP50,000; medical assistance of up to PHP200,000; and election-related death benefit amounting to PHP500,000.
"The honoraria are quite small compared to the service these teachers render as well as to the risks that some of them face in performing their poll duty," Salo said.
"The best incentive to them is the immediate payment of their honoraria, which certainly can be facilitated as it is ministerial," he added.
