Roach: Pacquiao good for 2 more fights

MANILA, Philippines Freddie Roach doesn’t think Manny Pacquiao should retire yet.

Pacquiao is expected to sit out the rest of the year after undergoing surgery for a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The Filipino icon aggravated the injury in his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas a month ago.

But Roach is confident that Pacquiao who lost to Mayweather via unanimous decision will be okay and forecasts him to return to the ring in nine months.

“Manny’s doing fine, he’s on 30 days’ isolation, he can’t move his arm for 30 days,” the trainer told Michael Woods of ringtv.com during a press conference in New York for the bout between Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale this weekend.

Roach happens to also train Cotto, whom Pacquiao knocked out in 2009.

Pacquiao, for his part, is under contract with Top Rank until 2016, and he’s expected to honor that commitment. His promoter Bob Arum is reportedly mulling to bring his prized ward to Dubai next year for a showcase fight.

Roach, meanwhile, believes Pacquiao is two fights away from retirement.

“I think he’s got a couple fights left in him,” said Roach. g Dino Maragay
