Robredo to public servants: Do good, perform well

MANILAVice President Leni Robredo said on Wednesday that good works and exemplary performance constitute the best campaign any public servant could have.

During her speech at the Politics of Hope: Stories of Outstanding Mayors in the Philippines event at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, Robredo shared stories of inspiring public servants whom the government officials should emulate.

Robredo lauded the accomplishments of Mayor Flora Villarosa, particularly the transformation of the town of Siayan in Zamboanga del Norte which was the poorest municipality from 2003 until 2009.

Before, Robredo said the town has a very high poverty incidence standing at 97.5 percent as she emphasized the efforts of the lady mayor in upturning the economic condition of the residents.

In 2010, it's like, suddenly the dark clouds covering over Siayan disappeared, Robredo said.

Robredo said she was impressed with the women leaders of Siayan when her team visited the municipality for the first time.

Pagpunta namin (When we went there), every barangay has a cooperative, every barangay seems like all the barangay leaders have been taught to be entrepreneurs, she said.

Robredo said stories like this should inspire local government officials to do good because they can contribute a lot in uplifting the face of one place.

She also shared the idealism of her late husband Jesse Robredo who had been the mayor of Naga City for 19 years.

Parating sinasabi ng asawa ko yung pinakamahusay na kampanya ang mabuting gawa at saka mabuting performance. Ang nagsa-shine sa lahat yung mga taong (My husband used to say the best campaign is good works and good performance. Those who shine from the rest are people) who carve their own paths hindi na ginagaya yung mga dati nang (not imitating the previous) tried and tested formulas but are willing to take risks, are willing to innovate, and willing to be creative without sacrificing their values, she said.
