Surigao City Sends P300-K Financial Aid to Iligan City

Surigao city: Surigao City has extended PHP300,000 in financial aid to residents severely affected by the onslaught of Tropical Storm (TS) Basyang in Iligan City. 'Through this effort, the people of Surigao continue to show support and solidarity with fellow communities as they move toward recovery,' the city government of Surigao said in a statement on Thursday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the financial aid was handed over by Jeffrey Galido, the budget officer of Surigao City, to Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao on Wednesday. The weather disturbance caused havoc in Iligan City last week, flooding several barangays and displacing over 20,000 residents.

Iligan City was placed under a state of calamity due to severe damage across its communities. Surigao City said preparations are underway to extend assistance to Surigao del Sur province, one of the areas affected by the devastation of TS Basyang.

Basyang made landfall in Surigao del Sur, particularly in the municipality of Bayabas, in the evening of Feb. 5. Surigao City also sustained damage during the storm, affecting 1,523 families (4,202 individuals) across 22 barangays.
