TESDA Allocates 8,000 Training Slots for OFWs Impacted by Middle East Conflict

Manila: The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is set to offer free training and assessment to 8,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are anticipated to take part in the government's repatriation program due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

According to Philippines News Agency, TESDA Public Information Office Director Floramel Joy Songsong mentioned in an interview that funding has been earmarked for the OFWs, covering both training funded by scholarships and free assessments. As part of the initiative, approximately 2,234 certificates of commitment have already been issued to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), with 413 of these distributed to OFWs.

Songsong further explained that the workers need to present these certificates to TESDA offices or accredited schools to access the benefits. She also noted that around 6,000 certificates are being prepared in anticipation of the returning OFWs. The DMW requested 5,000 slots, while the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported over 900 workers awaiting deployment.

Repatriated OFWs will have the opportunity to receive training in sectors such as construction, hospitality, caregiving, and information technology. TESDA is also providing entrepreneurship training to help returning workers establish their own businesses and achieve financial independence.

Songsong emphasized that OFWs are a priority for TESDA's programs, aiming to equip them with skills for global competitiveness and future security. She encouraged OFWs to seize this opportunity to enhance their skills, allowing them to be better prepared whether they choose to remain in the Philippines or face disruptions in their employment abroad.
