Manila: Xiamen Airlines is set to resume direct flights between Cebu and Quanzhou in Fujian to meet the growing demand for travel between China and the Philippines, the Chinese Embassy in Manila said Friday night. The route will operate Tuesdays and Saturdays starting March 29.
According to Philippines News Agency, the embassy announced that the airline will also increase flight frequencies between Xiamen and Manila. This announcement was made by Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan during the official launch of the Chinatown Revitalization Phase II at the Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila.
Jing stated that China has decided to open the direct flights upon the request of Cebu residents. He mentioned that if there is an increase in tourist numbers, more flights would be added. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of strengthening law enforcement cooperation with the Philippine side to combat crime and ensure safety in people-to-people exchanges.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who was present at the event, welcomed the resumption of the flight route. He expressed optimism that this development would foster stronger ties with China and hoped it would lead to more interactions and exchanges between the two countries.
In a separate statement, the embassy highlighted China's commitment to promoting people-to-people exchanges and advancing practical cooperation between China and the Philippines. The announcement came shortly after the Philippines granted a 14-day visa-free entry to Chinese tourists, aiming to revive the market, which was the country's second-highest in arrivals before the pandemic.
China currently ranks sixth in the Philippines' overall inbound arrivals, with more than 200,000 travelers expected in 2025, following South Korea, the United States, Japan, Australia, and Canada.
