The city government and the local security sector on Friday honored the heroes of the infamous Sept. 9, 2013 siege here through a floral offering at the “Fallen Heroes” marker here.
Remembered were the 38 people killed during the 21-day siege which included 20 soldiers, five policemen, and 13 civilians.
The siege broke out early morning of Sept. 9 when hundreds of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) loyal to MNLF chair Nur Misuari infiltrated and laid siege in five coastal barangays near the city hall.
In his message, Mayor John Dalipe described the 2013 siege as a historical moment that united residents to defend Zamboanga City.
“The resiliency of our people is a testament that our togetherness speaks of so much power,” Dalipe said. “As we remember those who have sacrificed their lives for us, may we be inspired by their living legacy of giving us our liberty.”
Dalipe, who vowed to put security first during his inauguration, issued an executive order designating Sept. 9 as a “Day of Remembrance” for the infamy of the 2013 siege.
