Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, on Monday ordered the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) to expedite administrative charges against six members of the Manila Police District (MPD) for alleged involvement in extortion activities.

“I commend the Manila Police District for acting on the complaint of extortion that led to the arrest of these 6 policemen. Let this serve as an assurance to our kababayans that we will not tolerate this illegal activity and we are serious in weeding out these kinds of policemen from our ranks,” Eleazar said in a statement.

Citing reports reaching his office, Eleazar said the six police officers allegedly extorted money from two curfew violators in Luzon St., Sta. Cruz, Manila whom they apprehended on October 14.

They have the ranks of patrolman, police staff sergeant, and police corporal.

One of those arrested by the policemen was a Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson.

The police officers seized from the curfew violators a tube pipe used as drug paraphernalia but did not recover illegal drugs from them.

The violators were brought to the Padre Algue Police Community Precinct where the cops allegedly asked for money from them in exchange for their freedom. The two raised PHP47,000 by supposedly pawning their motorcycle and a gold necklace.

When they were freed, the two reported the alleged extortion to other police officers.

The accused cops were disarmed and slapped with criminal charges for robbery and extortion.
