The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday called for a thorough probe into the killing of an election officer in Northern Samar.

“The entire Commission calls on the authorities to leave no stone unturned in its probe of the murder of (James Diaz) Mahanoy and to ensure that those responsible are brought swiftly to justice,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a Viber message to reporters.

In a separate statement, the Comelec Employees’ Union (Comelec-EU) also condemned the killing of Mahanoy, the election officer of Lope de Vega town.

“We demand no less than justice and reiterate our call for greater protection for Comelec employees as we go all-out in our preparations for the upcoming national and local elections,” Comelec-EU president Mac Ramirez said.

Reports said Mahanoy was on his way home aboard a motorcycle when a gunman shot him at close range at Sitio Gilalan-Gan, Barangay Somoge in Catarman, Northern Samar on Thursday.

The victim was rushed to the Northern Samar Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
