The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) on Friday said a total of 228,213 passengers have taken a ride on its trains on Thursday, the highest recorded number of daily passengers since the line resumed operations amidst the Covid-19 pandemic on June 1, 2020.

“Ito ay resulta ng mas pinataas na passenger capacity, mas mabilis na pagbiyahe ng mga tren at pagkakaroon ng mataas na bilang ng mga running at operational na train sets sa linya (This is the result of the expanded passenger capacity, faster train speeds, and having a high number of running and operational trains in the rail line),” the MRT-3 said in a Facebook post.

To date, it said MRT-3 trains are allowed to carry 70 percent of its maximum passenger capacity or 276 individuals per train car (827 passengers per train set) since the Alert Level 2 in Metro Manila.

On average, it said about 17 to 21 train sets are running along the MRT-3 main line during operational hours.

From a previous maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour (km/h), MRT-3 trains have been running at a maximum speed of 60 km/h since December 7, 2020.

“Dahil dito, nabawasan ang average headway o oras sa pagitan ng mga tren mula 8.5-9 na minuto sa 20 tren, pababa ng 3.5-4 minuto (Because of this, the average headway or time between trains was reduced from about 8.5 – 9 minutes for 20 trains, to only 3.5 to 4 minutes),” the MRT-3 said.

Despite the continued downtrend in Covid-19 cases and the resulting relaxation of restrictions, it reminded passengers that minimum public health and safety protocols continue to be enforced at the MRT-3 such as barring passengers from talking, eating, drinking, and mandatory wearing of face masks.
