Malacañang conveyed its condolences to the family of Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella, who died due to “septic shock secondary to pneumonia” on Friday.
Labella, 70, passed away before dawn at the Perpetual Succor Hospital in Cebu City.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and constituents of Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella who died this morning at the age of 70. We pray that perpetual light shine upon Mayor Labella and that he may rest in peace,” acting Presidential spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said in a press statement.
Before being elected mayor in 2019, Labella served two consecutive terms as vice mayor of Cebu City from 2013 to 2019.
He was a member of the City Council representing Cebu City’s north district from 1998 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2013.
In a separate statement, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar said Labella would be remembered for his “important role in the development of Cebu City’s vibrant economy and efficient social services over the years”.
“His commitment to public service was furthered by his firm support for the Duterte administration,” he said.
Andanar said Labella’s passing is “truly a loss to the Cebuanos and all the people who have had the privilege of knowing him. He has touched the lives of many, served his constituents, and uplifted them from poverty, alongside President Rodrigo Roa Duterte”.
Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino said he would always remember the moments with Labella in public service and the light moments as close friends.
“I will cherish all those moments with Mayor Ed and will always remember him as a strong leader with a joyful heart,” Dino posted on Facebook.
