Members of an indigenous peoples (IP) community in a remote village in Talaingod, Davao del Norte finished the Step 2 registration for the Philippine Identification System during a recent three-day mobile sign-up.

The Revitalized Pulis sa Barangay (R-PSB) provided security and assistance to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) personnel who facilitated the biometrics process in Sitio Lumabag, Barangay Palma Gil on August 26 to 28.

The R-PSB, in a Facebook post, shared that around 80 IP children signed up on the third day of registration.

Step 2 involves verification of demographic information and recording of fingerprint and iris scans and front-facing photographs.

“Children aged 5 years old and above were included in the registration. More or less 80 IP children were successfully registered for the 3rd day,” the R-PSB post read.

“The activity showed active partnership among government agencies in implementing programs aimed at delivering basic government services to the IP community,” the post added.

R-PSB is part of the Philippine National Police’s commitment to improve police-community partnership to, among others, combat crimes and assist residents during disaster and emergencies.

By the end of 2022, the government hopes to register up to 70 million Filipinos and resident aliens for PhilSys.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It also seeks to boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions.
