Manila: A total of 1,191 families across various areas in La Union have evacuated as a result of the adverse effects of Tropical Storm Maymay, a low pressure area known as Luis, and the intensified southwest monsoon as of 5 a.m. Thursday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has reported that out of the total evacuees, 732 families, comprising 2,080 individuals, are currently residing in evacuation centers. The remaining 459 families, amounting to 1,375 individuals, have sought shelter outside these centers. Affected residents hail from the towns of Bacnotan, Bangar, Luna, San Juan, Bauang, Burgos, Caba, and San Fernando City.

The situational report further highlighted that 42 barangays encountered power interruptions in Agoo, Bauang, Naguilian, Luna, and San Fernando City. Fortunately, power has been restored in 33 of these barangays. Additionally, seven houses in Bauang have sustained partial damage due to the severe weather conditions.

In response, the provincial government, in collaboration with the PDRRMO, has initiated relief distribution efforts in the municipalities of Bauang, Aringay, Agoo, Luna, Bangar, and Bacnotan. Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega emphasized the preparedness of both the provincial and local government units, stating that they remain vigilant and ready to mobilize resources whenever there is a typhoon advisory. He assured residents in evacuation centers that they would receive essential supplies, including food and other necessities.
