1 killed, 3 hurt in Basilan town ambush

One was killed while a village official and two of his wounded relatives survived an ambush in the Basilan town of Sumisip, a top police official said Thursday.

 

Col. Richard Verceles, operations chief of the Area Police Command – Western Mindanao, said that Ismael Halik died instantaneously from multiple gunshot wounds in an ambush in Barangay Sumisip Central, Sumisip, Basilan province at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

 

Wounded were Adil Alpara, Hadidja Alpara, and Ahya Alpara, the barangay chairperson of Guiong, Sumisip.

 

Verceles said the victims were aboard a pick-up truck on their way home to Barangay Guiong, Sumisip coming from Isabela City, when waylaid by unidentified men armed with M16 Armalite rifles.

 

He said the wounded victims were brought to the Basilan General Hospital in Isabela City for medical treatment.

 

Halik’s remains were turned over to his family for proper Muslim burial rites.

 

A team of policemen was immediately sent to Barangay Sumisip Central to maintain law and order as well as investigate the incident, the police official said.
