10 Killed as Rainfall-Triggered Landslide Hits Sarangani Village

Malapatan: Ten people were confirmed dead in a landslide that hit a farming village in Malapatan, Sarangani, before dawn Friday. Malapatan Mayor Salway Sumbo Jr. said the landslide occurred at Sitio Pandaw, Barangay Poblacion, at about 3 a.m. during a heavy downpour caused by the tail end of Typhoon Inday in the province.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sumbo identified the fatalities as Alejandro Maladian, Bina Binaton Maladian, Jordan Binaton Maladian, Weljay Maladian, Bonbon Cawari, Therd Yaton Dawang, Prince Yaton Dawang, Save Yaton Dawang, Daniel Binaton Dawang, and Ricky Ben Dawang. Sumbo said search and rescue teams continue retrieval operations to ensure that all the missing are found, whether dead or alive.

'The fatalities were related to each other, by affinity and by blood,' Sumbo said, adding that forced evacuation is in progress in some areas of Malapatan as light to heavy rains continue across the province. He expressed condolences to the families of the fatalities who are also victims of the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rocked the Soccsksargen region.
