142K learners preregister in Ilocos Region

Information

Some 142,027 learners in the Ilocos Region have availed of the early registration for the school year 2022-2023 of the Department of Education (DepEd) as of April 26.

In a forum hosted by the DepEd Ilocos regional office, Joey Pimental, statistician of the policy, planning, and research division, said that of the total number, 30,273 enrolled in Kindergarten, 47,878 in Grade 1, 30,525 in Grade 7, and 33,351 in Grade 11.

Those that preregistered were from the 2,999 schools from the four provinces of the Ilocos Region, he said.

Some 86,177 were logged in Pangasinan, 12,609 in Ilocos Norte, 24,577 in Ilocos Sur, and 18,664 in La Union.

“We still expect the number to increase as the early registration will end on April 30,” he added.

Pimental said 70,726 are male learners while 71,301 are female.

“Early registration of incoming Kindergarten, Grade 1, 7, and 11 learners in public schools shall be conducted from March 25 to April 30 nationwide. Grades 2 to 6, 8 to 10, and 12 are considered preregistered and will not need to participate in the early registration,” he said.

Private schools are encouraged to conduct their respective early registration activities in the same timeframe, Pimentel said.

The activity targets to enroll learners living in an area with a high level of criminality or drug abuse, having a chronic illness, having nutritional problems, a victim of child abuse, economic exploitation, stateless or undocumented, in conflict with the law, living on the streets, and those no longer in school but interested in going back to school, he said.

In a recent interview, DepEd Ilocos Region Public Affairs Unit head Cesar Bucsit said the registration is being held to anticipate the necessary preparations like the number of chairs and other needed resources for the resumption of classes for another school year.

Buscit said the early registration is done in-person as the entire Ilocos Region is now at Alert Level 1.

“The learners who availed of the early registration would lessen the hassle of enrolling on the actual start of classes,” he added
