Benguet: Two officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Cordillera region have been relieved over the death of a cyclist in Benguet. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon ordered the removal of District Engineer Isagani Cayme and Engineer Marjory Banao for failing to provide adequate road safety signage and traffic control devices, such as concrete barriers on the abandoned, collapsed section of the road in Barangay Beckel, La Trinidad.

According to Philippines News Agency, the lack of warning signs and the absence of a concrete barrier are the possible reasons for the accident wherein the 13-year-old victim died after falling off a cliff. Dizon warned DPWH contractors who do not follow safety requirements during construction that they would face the consequences of their inaction.

'Secretary Dizon warned that the agency's contractors who will not enforce strict safety requirements during an ongoing construction will automatically face cancellation of contracts, blacklisting, and criminal cases,' the DPWH statement read. It was reported that the collapsed road section had remained unrepaired since it was damaged by typhoons in 2025.
