Resident’s home spared from UP village fire

Forty-year-old tricycle driver Rodel Meniano could not believe that his house was spared from a fire that affected 134 families in Quezon City on Monday morning.

He asked his housemates to leave when the fire broke out at about 5:20 a.m. while his neighbors helped him avoid the disaster.

“Binuksan ko po ‘yung mga gripo tapos tinulungan ako ng mga kapitbahay namin. Nagpasahan kami ng balde-baldeng tubig para hindi na umabot dito yung apoy (I opened all faucets and my neighbors helped me. We passed buckets of water so the fire won’t reach me),” Meniano told the Philippine News Agency.

A physically-handicapped resident, Angelito Aliwalas, 58, was not as lucky.

His family lost all their belongings. Some of the fatalities lived just behind their house.

Three children aged 10, 8, and 3 were among the eight who died in the blaze in Village A and Village B in Barangay UP Campus, Diliman.

Some fire victims are temporarily sheltered in modular tents set up along the sidewalk while others are with relatives or at the local government evacuation site Advincula Hall.
