Three persons were killed while two others were injured when supporters of two local candidates shot it out inside a voting center in the Lanao del Sur town of Malabang Monday.

Col. Christopher Panapan, Lanao del Sur provincial police director, said they are still trying to determine the circumstances leading to the gunfight that killed three voters inside Malabang National High School.

“They were supporters of warring local aspirants,” Panapan told reporters in an interview.

Panapan said two of the fatalities were Ambol Macapodi and Ansano Paramata, both relatives of mayoral candidate Al-Rashid Boloto Macapodi, brother of the incumbent mayor.

Jong Balindong, the third fatality, was related to mayoral aspirant Dagar Balindong.

The fighting that erupted shortly before noon also left Saidamen Macapodi and Alikman Sidic wounded. They are now recuperating in a hospital.

As of Monday afternoon, Panapan said government forces are pursuing the gunmen who barged inside the compound posing as voters.

Malabang was placed under Comelec control, complete with police checkpoints in and out of the school grounds.
