Ilocos region: Thirty-one members of the communist New People's Army (NPA) and communist front organizations (CFOs) have surrendered to the authorities in August, according to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 1 (Ilocos Region).
According to Philippines News Agency, PRO-1 information officer Maj. Divina Albino stated in a phone interview that the surrenderers included four NPA rebels who handed over two firearms and four explosives. Additionally, 27 CFO members turned in three firearms. "This significant haul of personnel and weapons deals a blow to the operational capacity and influence of these threat groups in the Ilocos Region," Albino remarked.
Albino mentioned that the police conducted a debriefing with the surrenderers, during which their needs, risks, and reintegration possibilities were assessed. "Livelihood assistance and financial assistance were also provided in addition to remunerating surrendered firearms," she added.
Furthermore, Albino noted that the surrenderers received security and protective custody, with relocation offered if necessary. Law enforcement continues to provide ongoing support and monitoring to aid their societal adjustment. Since 2022, the Ilocos Region has been declared under a State of Stable Internal Peace and Security by the Joint Regional Development Council, Regional Peace and Order Council, and Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.
"The police, in partnership with other law enforcement agencies such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines, are continuously conducting operations to ensure that we maintain our status," Albino concluded.
