Manila: The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Tuesday that the number of families affected by the recent eruption of Mayon Volcano has reached 55,590. These families, consisting of 199,367 individuals, are from 124 barangays in the affected region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Mariano stated that 1,444 families, or 5,459 individuals, are currently taking refuge in evacuation centers. Additionally, 26 families, totaling 85 individuals, are being assisted outside of these centers. Mariano assured that further details would be provided should there be any significant developments related to the volcano's activity.
Earlier announcements from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) confirmed the distribution of over PHP117 million in humanitarian aid to the families impacted by the Mayon Volcano's unrest. As reported by the DSWD Disaster Response Operations Information Communication, the department has already distributed 71,153 family food packs, 7,634 non-food items, and 1,402 ready-to-eat meals to those affected.
Moreover, the DSWD has extended over PHP45 million in cash assistance to 3,487 farmers and internally displaced persons (IDPs) whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the pyroclastic activity of Mayon. Known for its iconic near-perfect cone shape, Mayon Volcano is one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes, with a history of sudden eruptions that can cause ashfall, lava flows, and hazardous mudflows. The recent eruption late Saturday afternoon covered nearby communities with heavy ashfall.
