Manila: Six persons died due to the combined effects of Tropical Storm Maymay and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Thursday. In a press briefing in Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson Col. Allen Rae Co reported a series of tragic incidents resulting in these fatalities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Col. Co detailed that a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman lost their lives in a rockfall-landslide incident in Rodriguez, Rizal. Additionally, drowning incidents claimed the lives of a 45-year-old man in Luna, La Union, and a 54-year-old man in Alaminos, Pangasinan. The Benguet police also reported a landslide in La Trinidad town, which buried an eatery in mud and resulted in the deaths of two men, aged 31 and 66.

Co further informed that approximately 3,012 individuals were being monitored by police across 55 evacuation centers in the affected regions. The PNP has deployed 877 officers to respond to the adverse effects of Maymay, with an additional 10,111 personnel on standby.

Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) announced on Thursday that it is in the process of verifying reports of four fatalities following landslide and rockslide incidents in Benguet and Rizal. OCD information officer Diego Mariano stated that these incidents occurred Thursday morning in La Trinidad, Benguet, and Wednesday noon in Rodriguez, Rizal. He emphasized that all data are still undergoing validation to determine if they are related to the tropical cyclone and monsoon, and therefore are not yet included in official reports. Search and rescue operations continue for both incidents.
