6 Transmission Lines Down in Northern Luzon Due to ‘Emong’

Manila: Six transmission lines in Northern Luzon are currently unavailable due to the effects of Typhoon Emong (international name Co-May), as reported by the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP). The lines affected include the 69-kilovolt (kV) Labrador-Bolinao line, which went down at about 12:20 a.m., impacting customers of the Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative (CENPELCO) and Pangasinan 1 Electric Cooperative (PANELCO 1).

According to Philippines News Agency, the Bauang-San Fabian 69kV line became unavailable at about 1:01 a.m., and the Bauang-Naguilian 69kV line went down at about 1:52 a.m., affecting customers of the La Union Electric Cooperative (LUELCO). Additionally, the Bauang-San Fernando 115kV line faced problems at 1:41 a.m., while the Bacnotan-Bulala 69kV line went down at 2:34 a.m., both impacting LUELCO customers. Another 230kV line is unavailable, but specific details have not been provided by NGCP.

The power transmission operator indicated that inspection and restoration of affected lines will commence once weather conditions permit. They noted that power loss might be due to transmission facility issues by NGCP or distribution facility problems by local utilities or cooperatives. Specific areas affected by outages are determined by the concerned distribution utilities unless the entire franchise area is impacted.

The weather bureau's 8 a.m. bulletin highlighted that Typhoon Emong has weakened into a severe tropical storm as it moves through the Cordillera region. Its center was last located in San Isidro, Abra, progressing north-northeastward at 25 kilometers per hour.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 has been raised over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and several other regions, while Signal No. 2 is issued for areas including Batanes, the rest of mainland Cagayan, and other parts of Luzon. Signal No. 1 covers additional areas, including parts of Pangasinan, Isabela, and Aurora, among others.
