Manila: Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which is celebrating its seventh anniversary Wednesday, showcases that a path of dialogue can lead to peace.
According to Philippines News Agency, Galvez emphasized that the establishment of the BARMM is more than just fulfilling the peace agreement between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). It represents the realization of a generations-long aspiration-a sacred quest for meaningful autonomy. He stated that this "historic milestone" is proof that the country can opt for dialogue over conflict, paving the way for a future with justice and dignity.
"Seven years ago, we embarked on a historic journey that redefined the landscape of peace in Mindanao. As we celebrate the seventh anniversary of the BARMM, I join the entire nation in honoring the resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit of the Bangsamoro people," Galvez remarked.
Galvez also recognized the changing political landscape, particularly with the recent passage of the Bangsamoro Districting Law. He noted that this development is a crucial step toward enhancing grassroots representation and bringing the government closer to the people. This underscores the government's commitment to a democratic process that is inclusive and responsive to the unique needs of every community within the region.
Galvez urged the Bangsamoro community to remain steadfast in sustaining the gains of the peace process. He acknowledged the complexity of the transition journey but emphasized that the progress made in governance, economic stability, and social healing is too valuable to lose. He called for the protection of these milestones with the same fervor that brought them to fruition.
The BARMM replaced the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao following the ratification of its basic law, Republic Act 11054, or the Bangsamoro Organic Law. This followed a two-part legally binding plebiscite in Western Mindanao held on Jan. 21 and Feb. 6, 2019, with the ratification confirmed a few days later on Jan. 25 by the Commission on Elections.
