Manila: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in the Ilocos Region has disbursed a total of PHP525,000 in financial aid to eight overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Pangasinan. These workers were recently repatriated from the Middle East due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
According to Philippines News Agency, DMW Ilocos Region director Christian Rey Sison stated that the financial assistance is intended to help the repatriated OFWs start small businesses, cover medical expenses, or invest in livelihood training for long-term sustainability. DMW Ilocos Region officer-in-charge assistant director Romeo Jaramilla explained that the cash assistance is part of the agency's Aksyon Fund, which offers comprehensive support including legal representation, repatriation, and medical care during employment crises.
Jaramilla emphasized that the aid is meant to help the OFWs manage their current distressing situations. He noted that the assistance provided by the DMW is tailored to the specific needs of each OFW. Jaramilla also highlighted that the safety of OFWs during crises is ensured by the migrant workers' office abroad, in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs. He added that the DMW is prepared to send additional teams if necessary to maximize assistance.
The eight OFWs were successfully repatriated on June 24, overcoming earlier flight disruptions due to Qatar's temporary airspace closure. Their flights were re-routed, allowing them to arrive safely at NAIA Terminal 3, accompanied by DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Undersecretary Venecio Legaspi.
In addition to the cash aid from DMW, each OFW will receive financial assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, training vouchers from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, medical assistance from the Department of Health, and additional support referrals from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the returnees that the government is committed to helping them build sustainable livelihoods or secure new employment opportunities.
