Abra: Abra's Police Provincial Office (PPO) has increased its personnel deployment to areas classified as 'problematic' in preparation for the upcoming May 12 election.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lt. Col. Daniel Pel-ey, Abra PPO information officer, stated in a media interview that they are closely monitoring these areas with the help of additional personnel and vehicles provided by other PPOs. The Provincial Joint Security Control Center has categorized three municipalities-Bangued, Pilar, and Bucay-under the Orange security category, indicating serious armed threats. Meanwhile, six municipalities-Tayum, Lagangilang, Pidigan, Dolores, Tineg, and Lagayan-are under the Yellow category, marked by a history of election-related incidents.
Pel-ey emphasized that the police are employing a strategy of peripheral presence during activities in the province to deter election-related violence. By maintaining a visible presence and staying nearby when needed, police aim to prevent or quickly respond to any incidents.
While he assured that there are currently enough police personnel, Pel-ey noted the potential challenges on Election Day. He highlighted that the deployment of police as election board members could impact security functions if teachers back out from serving. To address this, about 100 police personnel have been trained to fill in if necessary.
Furthermore, Pel-ey mentioned they have requested additional personnel from the Cordillera regional police and are hopeful for approval. He also urged political supporters to remain calm and maintain friendly interactions to prevent misunderstandings.
Pel-ey concluded by advising supporters to stay composed and courteous to avoid any untoward incidents during the election period.
