Albay Jeepney Drivers Receive PHP5,000 Cash Assistance Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Legazpi city: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 5 (Bicol), in collaboration with the regional office of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), has disbursed PHP5,000 in cash assistance to 651 public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers in Albay's 2nd District. This distribution is part of the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program, aimed at supporting those affected by increasing fuel prices.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio stated that the payout, totaling more than PHP3.25 million, is part of an ongoing governmental effort to aid the transportation sector during challenging economic times. This initiative is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to bolster social programs for sectors heavily impacted by global economic issues.

The beneficiaries have expressed their gratitude for the assistance, noting its potential to alleviate fuel costs, daily expenses, and medical needs. Alex Ajero, a 58-year-old jeepney driver from Banquerohan, Legazpi City, expressed his thanks to the President for the aid he received at the Albay Astrodome. Ajero plans to use the cash aid to fill his jeepney's tank, which will allow him to earn additional income after his earnings dropped from over PHP500 to only PHP300 due to the oil price hike.

Lito Paleon, 51, also from Banquerohan, acknowledged that the cash aid is a substantial support amid high fuel prices. He mentioned, "Diesel is expensive now. This will help us buy fuel because sometimes we struggle to earn enough and still provide for our families."

Ernesto Madro±o, 69, a jeepney driver from Sto. Cristo, Daraga, highlighted the relief the assistance brings for drivers experiencing reduced income. "This is important for us drivers who are earning less. It helps cover our daily financial expenses," Madro±o said.

Ignacio A±on, 73, also from Daraga, revealed he intends to use the funds to purchase maintenance medicines, hoping it will contribute to his longevity. "I'm going to use this to buy medicine for my illness. I hope this helps me live longer," A±on shared.
