All Roads Lead to Cebu in 2028 for Asian Beach Games Hosting

Cebu: The Philippines' hosting of the 7th Asian Beach Games (ABG) in 2028 in Cebu has been sealed, as the country's top sports officials, spearheaded by Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino, signed on the dotted line.

According to Philippines News Agency, the agreement was finalized during the official contract signing at the Conifer Resort. Tolentino expressed excitement for the Philippines to host two major events: the Southeast Asian Plus Youth Games next December and the Asian Beach Games in March 2028. He emphasized the significance of these events in the context of the country's sports tourism program and expressed confidence in the nation's ability to host large sporting events.

Tolentino, alongside OCA President His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, signed the hosting deal, marking a return of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) events to the Philippines after a long hiatus. The build-up for both the SEA Plus YG and the Cebu ABG has been ongoing, with the official logos and mascots set to be unveiled in June.

The Philippine Sports Commission, under Chairperson Patrick 'Pato' Gregorio, also supports hosting these significant events, aligning with the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee's mandate. Tolentino highlighted that the SEA Plus YG would be a larger competition with participation from countries beyond Southeast Asia, including Chinese Taipei, Macau, and potentially countries from Central Asia like Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

The SEA Plus YG is expected to be an Under-16 event, providing an opportunity for youth athletes and their families to experience Manila. Meanwhile, the Asian Beach Games will showcase the Philippines' capabilities as a strong contender in beach sports, building on their current third-place standing in the games held in Sanya.
