Manila: Members of the Philippine National Police's Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) arrested a 50-year-old construction worker for alleged sextortion in Manila.
According to Philippines News Agency, acting ACG chief Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang stated that the suspect, alias Ric, was apprehended in an entrapment operation by the Manila District Anti-Cybercrime Team (MDACT) in the Tondo District shortly before 1 p.m. on January 12. The suspect allegedly threatened a 19-year-old female victim, claiming he would disseminate her explicit photos and videos on social media if she did not comply with his demands for sexual favors.
The investigation revealed that the victim initially met the suspect online, and they subsequently engaged in sexual activities. The suspect began blackmailing the victim after she refused any further interaction with him. Following the victim's complaint, MDACT operatives organized an entrapment operation, which resulted in the suspect's arrest.
Yang noted that the suspect is facing charges for violating Article 286 (Grave Coercion) of the Revised Penal Code and Republic Act (RA) 9995 (Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009), in connection with Section 6 of RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012). He emphasized that such acts are serious violations of the law, subject to severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment. He urged victims of online abuse to report incidents promptly to enable swift action.
The ACG recorded 10 voyeurism cases from January 1 to 9 this year, showing an increase from four cases filed during the same period last year.
