Antique Relaunches ‘Oplan Beach Watch’ to Prevent Drowning Incidents During Holy Week

Antique: The provincial government of Antique has relaunched its 'Oplan Beach Watch' initiative to prevent drowning incidents during Holy Week. Spearheaded by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in collaboration with its municipal counterparts, the program annually deploys personnel to monitor and assist in case of emergencies.

According to Philippines News Agency, personnel trained in water rescue have been deployed to monitor resorts with swimming pools. PDRRMO chief Broderick Train mentioned in an interview that personnel were already monitoring the beaches early in the morning of Maundy Thursday, anticipating an influx of families and tourists. This is especially timely as visitors are expected to explore the province's beaches during the Lenten period, in addition to visiting religious sites.

An added feature of this initiative is a coastal cleanup, which was conducted alongside the relaunch of 'Oplan Beach Watch' for Holy Week. This effort included raising awareness about proper waste disposal among beach-goers. The initiative will continue until April 20, following its kick-off on April 14.

In parallel efforts, provincial and municipal DRRMOs are collaborating with the Department of Public Works and Highways for 'Oplan Lakbay Alalay' to ensure road safety for travelers. Personnel are prepared to assist commuters who may require health emergency responses. The public is also advised to protect themselves from extreme heat by wearing personal protective equipment such as hats and sunglasses and staying hydrated.
