Antique Town Mayor Advocates for Continued DSWD Risk Resiliency Program

San Remigio: The mayor of San Remigio in Antique has expressed a desire to maintain the risk resiliency program initiated by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the municipality. Mayor Margarito Mission Jr. emphasized the importance of the program's long-term impact on residents, hoping it will benefit them for years to come.

According to Philippines News Agency, a ground-breaking ceremony took place for the Local Adaptation to Water Access (LAWA) and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished (BINHI) in Barangay Bugo, marking the fourth barangay in San Remigio to participate in the risk resiliency program. The local government has allocated PHP300,000 for the project's support, in addition to providing heavy equipment and cement for constructing a small farm reservoir (SFR). The program aims to support 700 beneficiaries in improving food security through tilapia cultivation.

DSWD Western Visayas focal person Joy Ann Catherine Salbibia stated that the program offers a 20-day temporary livelihood for participants. The SFR will act as a water catchment for nearby farms, with plans to establish vegetable gardens around the reservoir. Efforts are also underway to secure tilapia fingerlings from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

Salome Victoriano-Mader, who owns the land designated for the reservoir, envisions developing the SFR as an agro-tourism destination, attracting families and tourists for fishing activities. She expressed hopes for a successful production to alleviate poverty in the barangay.

Beneficiaries Lope Buenavinte and Milly Villanueva welcomed the temporary employment opportunity ahead of the school opening on June 16. Villanueva, a housekeeper with two children in elementary school, expressed relief at having an income to support her children's educational needs.

Other SFR sites in San Remigio include barangays Barangbang, Cadolonan, and Vilvar.
