Apayao Province Trains Peer Facilitators to Combat Mental Health Issues.

Apayao: The Provincial Health Office of Apayao is actively addressing the rise in mental health-related cases by training 29 peer facilitators who will provide support throughout the province. Governor Elias Bulut Jr. has highlighted that this initiative aims to offer accessible mental health care services to residents, focusing on early intervention for those experiencing suicidal thoughts and other mental health challenges. According to Philippines News Agency, the Provincial Health Office has initiated the creation of a peer facilitators group in response to the alarming mental health statistics in the region. The province recorded 17 suicide-related deaths in the first half of 2024, following 21 such deaths in 2023. The PHO, in collaboration with the Provincial Department of Health Office, emphasizes the significance of Peer Support Groups in offering safe spaces for individuals, particularly the youth, to share experiences, seek guidance, and build resilience. The facilitators, drawn from the PHO and municipal health offices, have undergone comprehensive three-day training. This preparation equips them to serve as peer facilitators within support groups across different municipalities, ensuring effective mental health interventions, especially for students requiring assistance.
