Arespacochaga Appointed Head Coach of Gilas Women Youth for FIBA SEABA Qualifiers

Bacolod city: The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced Tuesday the appointment of Alexander "Sandy" Arespacochaga as head coach of the Gilas Women Youth. The team is set to compete in the FIBA Women's U-18 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers from June 2 to 6 at the STI West Negros University gym in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

According to Philippines News Agency, Arespacochaga brings a wealth of experience, having been a multi-titled assistant coach in the UAAP and PBA. He previously led Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup in 2019. His appointment is part of SBP's ongoing efforts, led by president Ricky Vargas, to invest more in women's basketball.

Gilas Pilipinas Women Program Director Bacon Austria emphasized Arespacochaga's role as a teacher and his experience in FIBA tournaments. Austria mentioned that assistant coaches from NU and UST high school programs will support Arespacochaga, given their success in women's high school competitions.

The Philippines has secured a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women's U-18 Asia Cup as Division B winner in 2024, ensuring promotion to the top tier. Arespacochaga expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach women's basketball and aims to elevate the sport by forming a pool of talented players for the future.

The team awaits the arrival of Tiffany Reyes and Sophia Dignadice, key players with previous international experience. Arespacochaga plans to engage with them online until they can join the team physically. He aims to implement a practical system for the tournament, considering the limited preparation time.

Reyes is expected to arrive in late May, while Dignadice is scheduled to join just before the tournament begins.
