Pasay city: Southeast Asian countries are urged to work more closely and establish a single 'wellness identity' to capture the growing USD6.8-trillion global wellness economy. Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) President Ferdinand "Perry" Ferrer made the call as the country opens the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Health Tourism and Wellness Economy Summit in Pasay City on Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ferrer emphasized the importance of collaboration among the 11 ASEAN nations. He urged them to cease competing for the same investors and visitors and instead focus on creating a wellness identity that is globally recognized as uniquely ASEAN. Ferrer pointed out that the future of the wellness economy extends beyond traditional sectors like spas and supplements, and that ASEAN could play a pivotal role in harmonizing standards, and sharing data and best practices.
Ferrer highlighted the convergence of previously distinct sectors, such as healthcare with hospitality, nutrition with technology, and mental well-being with public policy. He suggested that by facilitating the movement of entrepreneurs across economies, ASEAN could unlock substantial economic potential, capable of generating hundreds of billions of dollars.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian echoed Ferrer's sentiments, stating that ASEAN is well-positioned to capitalize on opportunities in health tourism. Gatchalian, who also serves as the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) chair, noted that the health and wellness sector in the Philippines alone generated USD5.5 billion in 2024, with medical tourism contributing USD1.2 billion.
Gatchalian stressed that these figures represent just a fraction of the region's potential. He encouraged continued collaboration to transform the increasing demand into new opportunities for the people of ASEAN. Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment as the 2026 ASEAN chair to advance a regional health framework that is resilient, sustainable, equitable, and people-centered.
Herrera-Lim emphasized the importance of a healthy population in weathering crises, seizing opportunities, and contributing to regional growth. He envisioned a future where ASEAN wellness is accessible, communities are empowered, and every individual has the chance to lead a healthier and more meaningful life, ensuring that health becomes a shared birthright.
The summit builds upon the foundation of the Bangkok Conference, which established the landmark ASEAN Health and Wellness Tourism Policy Framework and Roadmap.
