Hanoi: Australia claimed the first five-set victory of the AVC Women's Volleyball Cup 2026, overcoming host Philippines, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-11, to earn its first win at Candon City Arena in Ilocos Sur on Sunday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Alyssa Solomon, who sat out the opening-day win over Uzbekistan (25-16, 25-12, 25-14) the day before, finished with 23 points on 22 attacks and one block to lead all scorers. Ni±a Ytang added 13 points comprising nine attacks, one block, and three aces, while Alyssa Valdez contributed 11 attack points to the team's victory. The Philippines is set to face Kyrgyzstan on Monday.
Meanwhile, defending champion Vietnam secured its second win at the expense of Hong Kong, with scores of 25-9, 25-18, 25-11. Thi Nhu Quynh Vi scored 11 points, all on attacks, as Vietnam maintained its lead in Group B following an earlier win over Lebanon with scores of 25-3, 25-13, 25-14. Vietnam executed 40 attacks against Hong Kong's 22 and capitalized on the latter's 25 errors. Sum Yuen Tang scored nine points for Hong Kong, marking its second consecutive loss. Vietnam will next face Indonesia, while Hong Kong is set to compete against Lebanon.
In another match, Chinese Taipei dominated Kyrgyzstan, 25-14, 25-11, 25-17, in Pool A of the tournament presented by the Philippine Sports Commission. Kyrgyzstan stayed close with an 8-7 score in the second set, but Chinese Taipei stepped up their game to take an 18-9 lead, ultimately securing the win.
