Bacolod: Bishop Patricio Buzon of the Diocese of Bacolod said the detention of former president Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, The Netherlands can be considered by his supporters as a spiritual opportunity.
According to Philippines News Agency, Buzon emphasized in his homily during a Holy Mass at the San Sebastian Cathedral that Duterte's detention is a special grace and a chance for him to return to God. Buzon highlighted that with Duterte turning 80 on March 28, he is living on 'borrowed time', suggesting that prison time can be more powerful than a spiritual retreat.
Supporters of Duterte argue that the charges are politically motivated and call for his return to the Philippines. However, Buzon challenged these loyalists to reconsider their support, urging them to prioritize what is best for Duterte, suggesting that true love seeks the good of the beloved.
Buzon further noted that if Duterte's followers profess undying love for him, they should acknowledge that God's love for him is infinitely greater. He also expressed concern over blind fanaticism and urged Filipinos to prioritize national unity over partisan loyalty and to combat the spread of fake news.
The former president is detained in The Hague to face crimes against humanity charges before the ICC, following his arrest by Interpol and local police on March 11.
