Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez on Monday confirmed that he has contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), but is experiencing only mild symptoms.
In a statement, Benitez said he had himself tested on Monday as part of the health protocols before meeting with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. after he arrived in the country from a trip to Japan.
“Upon my arrival in Manila this morning from my official leave, I had myself tested for my meeting with President BBM and the result was positive. I feel okay but with mild symptoms,” he said.
Benitez, who has received Covid-19 booster shots, said he is working from home while recuperating.
“Rest assured that all day-to-day task of the city would continue to function well,” the mayor said.
He reminded city residents to always stay safe since the challenges of the Covid-19 remain.
Benitez encouraged the other city officials and villages chiefs who joined him during the trip abroad to also have themselves tested.
Among those who went with him in Japan were Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya and eight city councilors.
